The reason I ask is because he is in WA state, and they are tax exempt. I am in VA. When my taxguy did our state taxes we were owing $1300 because of this. When I asked him to do the state separately he said that is not possible. Is that true? My husband is in the military.

Filed Chapter 13 jointly, spouse has died, what now?
My husband and I filed Chapter 13 and now my husband has passed away. It’s only been a week or so. The only income that I have now is a Soc. Sec. check for my son who is almost 17. I am not old enough for widows benifits until Nov. I am not working as my husband was so sick and I had to care for him at home. I did not have enough credits to get my own soc. sec. I do not have enough income to continue an $1800 a month payment to the bankruptcy court. It seems my only salvation temporarily is a possible disability check that would be retroactive to July. I believe I owe only about $9,000. I am doing my tax return today and will make a copy of it and attach the death certificate, and send it along to either the attorney or the trustee, I am not sure which to send it to. Is their any relief in the law for this kind of situation. The only assets are my home and car and contents of our house. We had no insurance of any kind. I would appreciate any help with this….Thanks so much!
I already filed my tax return for year 2007 jointly with my wife. Can I refile the tax return?
I already filed my tax return for year 2007 (using wife’s ITIN). Now, I want to change my wife’s ITIN with her SSN that she got in year 2007. Is it possible to refile or change the ITIN with SSN.
I have a court order my ex-wife owes me $ for taxes I paid jointly. I don’t want to spend more $ on attorneys.
I’ve already spent too much $ on attorneys and I’m not 100% certain she will ever pay me. What can I do myself as far as enforcing the court order?
Filing state tax in 2 states – married filing jointly – only one spouse liable?
My husb is a truck driver and his employer is based in Iowa. We live in Nebraska and file state tax here. He also has to file in Iowa to get back what was paid there since we only have to pay in one state. How do we do this so my income isn’t included in the Iowa filing since I never worked there? Does he have to file separately first in Iowa, and then we file jointly in Nebraska? I usually use Turbo Tax. thank you!
Intercepting state tax returns for debt from before marriage if filing jointly?
I have Debt from unpaid fines from before i got married. This year we were told by the irs website that other goverment agency’s and collection agencys were intercepting the returns to pay these debts. My husband and i file jointly so we get more back and my income is listed as $0 seeing as i dont work. The only income on our taxes is from my husband. We were not expecting a return but a few weeks later we got our full refund back, nothing was taken out. The agency’s didn’t have my married last name, just my maiden one so the s.s. number and name didn’t match which i know they have to in order for them to take the return. They now have my correct last name so in our 2007 filings can they take out the debts even though my income will be $0 again, but my last name now matches my s.s. numbers in their books? Or because my husband is the only one with income and the debt was before we got married can they not lawfully take it even though it was jointly filed.
I know that they cannot garnish his pay check for it. That’s why i was wondering. Our tax returns are technically only his money as again my income is $0.
Tax law and filing jointly. Spouse conniving and owes big?
Help my mom is married to a man that always tries to get her to pay the bill. He sold stocks and owes the $18,000 estimated and maybe more. She is told if she files jointly with him he will only owe $8,000. She has suffered enough debt from this man and I told her to see a tax attorney. Her signing jointly is like cosigning for a loan and he is not responsible enough to trust to pay it himself. What are my mom’s options. She would get back $44 if files seperate. Legal or knowledgable replys only
