Tax advice for an unemployed individual receiving a one-time referral fee?
I am currently unemployed and may receive a success fee from a seller to whom I referred a buyer. I am not employed by any company and I strictly acted as an individual helping someone out, and being financially rewarded. Estimated amount is upwards of $300,000.
I’m sure I’ll need professional advice to hash out the details, but beside federal and state taxes, will I need to pay social security and/or other taxes that are common to wage earners? Currently in California. Thanks!
Why Contact an Attorney Referral Service?
You never know when you may need an attorney. There are many attorneys in Los Angeles but finding the right one isn’t easy. Selecting the right attorney is a matter of knowing when you need one, what type of attorney is best and the steps to choose the right attorney.
If you need an attorney and you don’t know how to find the right one, contact a Los Angeles lawyer referral service. An attorney referral service is a service that assists people in finding an attorney who will provide them with the legal services they require. Almost all Los Angeles attorney referral services are free of cost. You don’t pay the referral service provider; you only need to pay the attorney’s fees directly to the attorney.
All Los Angeles lawyer referral service providers have strict selection criteria for attorneys joining their network. Attorneys who fall short of the criteria are not allowed to join the network. The attorneys’ qualifications and area of specialization are checked before an attorney is allowed to join the network.
In big cities like Los Angeles, attorneys specialize in different areas of law like tax, real estate, criminal, trust, entertainment, personal injury, etc. Even within each area there are further levels of specialization. For example within personal injury there are attorneys who specialize in car accidents, brain injuries, slip and fall, etc.
The right lawyer is one who is competent, brings in outstanding results and keeps fees and expenses under control. First you will need to determine what kind of lawyer you need. In many cases a general attorney will work fine, but if your case requires specific knowledge and experience, an attorney who specializes may be a better choice. An attorney referral service can put you in touch with an attorney specializing in your case. You need not worry about verifying the attorney’s credentials or experience. The selection process of the referral service will verify the attorney’s credentials.
When you first contact a Los Angeles lawyer referral service, they will ask you few questions. Your answers will help them determine if you really have a legal problem and if you really need the services of an attorney. Once they determine your problem, they will refer you to an attorney who is best suited for your requirements. Some Los Angeles attorney referral services provide free initial consultation with the attorney. Attorney referral services provide an invaluable service in locating a dependable attorney so before you contact a law firm, make sure to contact your local lawyer referral service.
