Democrats: Middle-class tax relief a priority
Story Highlights
• Democrats vow push to keep middle class from paying tax intended for wealthy
• Change would cost at least $50 billion a year at a time of budget deficits
• Bush proposes another one-year fix in his 2008 budget submission to Congress
• White House budget director: “It’s a harder issue than it seems”
WASHINGTON (Reuters) — As millions of Americans rush to file their annual income tax returns before the April 17 deadline, Democrats promised to push to keep middle-class families from paying a tax originally intended for the very wealthy.
The alternative minimum tax, initially intended to ensure that the rich could not take so many deductions and credits that they paid no federal income taxes, will hit some 23 million taxpayers next spring when they file their 2007 income tax returns unless Congress takes action.
“This tax now affects schoolteachers, firefighters, police officers. It was never intended to be that way,” said Rep. Rahm Emanuel, an Illinois Democrat who sits on the tax-writing Ways and Means Committee in the U.S. House of Representatives.
“Middle-class families making between $75,000 and $100,000 are now more likely this year to pay the tax than those making more than a million dollars,” Emanuel said in the weekly Democratic radio address Saturday.
Congress has been enacting a series of temporary measures to keep more middle- and upper middle-income taxpayers from paying the AMT, and President Bush proposed another one-year fix in his 2008 budget submission to Congress.
House Ways and Means Committee Chairman Charles Rangel has said he will push for permanent AMT relief for those taxpayers who were never meant to pay it. The problem is a cost of at least $50 billion a year to the federal Treasury at a time of war outlays and big budget deficits.
About 4 million taxpayers paid the AMT in 2005, according to the latest available data from the Internal Revenue Service. That number could grow to 30 million in a few years.
White House Budget Director Rob Portman told Reuters last week he would like to see a long-term fix to the AMT, but acknowledged the difficulty.
“It’s a harder issue than it seems,” he said.
House Democrats want a solution that does not add to the deficits, and that will mean raising revenue by closing tax loopholes and possibly raising taxes on others, which would make it hard to win support from congressional Republicans.
“We will work with our Republican colleagues to identify bipartisan solutions that help middle-class families avoid this tax that was never intended for them,” Emanuel said. “This is the one thing on which Democrats and Republicans should agree.”
Emanuel also said reforming the AMT, which forces people to calculate their taxes under two different sets of rules, would be a major step forward in simplifying the tax code.

When can we expect to get our income tax relief checks? Does it go alphabetically or by our SS numbers?

09 Jun

The $1200 for a couple check is what I am talking about. I was wondering if anyone knew for sure when they would be mailing them out and will it be listed alphabetically or will they go by the last two digits of our SS numbers? Thank you so much :)
I heard on KTAL ( Shreveport ) this morning that the government would begin mailing the checks later This week.

Washington, DC (AHN)-In order to be eligible for the Bush administration’s Tax Relief Checks to be sent this summer, U.S. taxpayers must file a tax form for 2007 and must fall into a certain socioeconomic group. Only those individuals making less than $75,000 annually and couples making less than $150,000 per year are qualified to receive the rebate checks.

According to government officials, U.S. citizens who made less than $75,000 in annual income in 2007 will receive a rebate check for $600. A married couple who files a joint tax return and makes less than $150,000 gets $1,200 back, plus an additional $300 rebate per child.

The rebate checks are scheduled to be sent out according to the last two digits of every person’s social security number. For instance, those whose social security number ends between 00-09 will receive their check during week one of the mail out, somewhere around July 23. The

Innoncent spouse tax relief for hubby?

06 Jun

2 yrs b4 I met hubby I file taxes and received EIC for my 2 adopted sisters. Theses girls are the great nieces of my mom and when my mom took sick, I took care of ALL of them (mom and 2 girls). I received a refund for all of them for about 2 years in a row, but then in year 3, i was told that the rules had changed and I was no longer able to claim the girls and I needed to refund the $ I received. When I got married 2 years later, the IRS took my husbands $$ because of what I owed. This year I’d like for him to file for innoncent spouse relief but I’m soooo unclear as to where to start…and is he not entitled to the $ they kept from him last year……FYI….I’ve tried going through the appeals process on my behalf, HOWEVER, the gov claims they sent a form to me to fill out, but I did not respond….I’ve filled out EVERYTHING and RETURNED what they’ve sent me (all sent by certified mail) however, they CLAIM a form was sent (NOT certified), that I never returned & CASE DISMISSED

I’m 23 years old, my dad can claim me as a dependent, will he get the tax relief check?

04 Jun

How exactly do tax relief checks work? Who is qualified to get them? I asked my dad, and he says, since he can still claim me as a dependent, the check will come in his name, is that true? Is there any way I can get the check to come in my name, since I earned it by working?

Can someone explain to me again exactly how tax relief to upper tier income individuals expands our economy?

02 Jun

I’m lost in the concept of how freeing up more money for upper income folks to invest expands our economy and creates jobs.
People who invest money do so where they get the greatest returns. The greatest returns are in countries with expanding economies, like China. Why invest in America with an economy expanding at a 4% rate when you can earn 4 times as much in the Chinese economy, which is expanding at a 12% rate.
Exactly how does this benefit our economy? How does giving upper income people more money to invest overseas create more jobs here?
Why is it less beneficial to give the middle class, who are likely to spend their money within the USA, a tax break?

Is it possible to get relief from IRS debt without hiring an expensive firm? Can it be done by the individual?

31 May

2001 taxes not paid. X wife did not file. H&R Block processed taxes. X wife did not send them in. During this time was having bladder and prostate removed due to cancer. Taxes were the last thing on my mind. Have in the mean time, divorced, the then wife and am strapped with $40K worth of IRS debt. Interest is compounding. How in a lifetime could anyone ever pay this debt off? Do I have to refinance my house to eliminate this debt? Can I fight this on my own without the help of any firm that charges no less than $3K and can give no guarantees? Will be glad to send a letter to my Congressman, State Representative, etc. for any advice they can give. Any suggestions?

Do the Midwestern Disaster Tax Relief benefits still apply in 2009?

28 May

After declaring many areas of the midwest Federal Disaster Areas in summer of 2008, Congress modified tax law to provide relief for those living, working, and attending school in affected areas. Concerning education credits, IRS publication 4492-B states the following:

“The education credits have been expanded for students attending an eligible educational institution located in a Midwestern disaster area (Midwestern disaster area students) for any tax year beginning in 2008 or 2009.” (p. 9)

I took expanded credits in 2008, but this document seems to imply that the benefits are applicable in 2009 as well. Is this true?
