I’ve been preparing personal income taxes for years now for friends and family. I have just a couple of dozen clients or so. I really want to develop this into a real business. What are some good ideas on how to market the service?

Need help with a very small business tax question Thanks?

06 Jun

My friend and I started a flea market business in April 2009 selling baby items. We spent $3,149 buying merchandises and at the end of the 2009, the value of our inventory is $2,449. Our gross sale is around $930. When I input in TurboTax, $2,449 as the value of the inventory at the end of 2009; we got charged $1200 from federal .

Why is there a charge of $1200!!!!! We have lost money already, we can’t afford to lose anymore.

Please help
Thanks in advance

Is it better to work at a small law firm assisting one lawyer or is it better to work at a larger firm??

04 Jun

I did two interviews at a law firm. One of the position was doing secretary/ receptionist.. As I get experiences, I would get my own clients. This frim is mid size with about 10 employees. I did other interview today. This law firm had only one attorney where I would have to work as executive assistant. As a beginner, is it better to work with more co workers or is it okay to work for one lawyer? What is better? Which one would you prefer? Also doing tax, is it better to be paid as independent contractor where I have to do my own taxes or it it better for me to be in the payroll where they do my taxes? which one would be better? any suggestion?

What is a good strategy for selling a small business without paying capital gains tax?

29 May

I have an automotive repair shop and I would like to defer paying capital gains tax by rolling the proceeds of the sale of the business into another investment. I do not see the point of paying capital gains tax on the sale when I will simply take the money and reinvest it in another business. Can I do this even if the money does not go into a similar business? Ideally, I’d like to invest the money in a mutual fund and take out maybe 10% per year to help with living expenses.

Small Business Tax Advice LLC?

25 May

Yesterday I officially incorporated my home/online based business as a LLC. I’m now realizing that I have many questions as to how to maximize my tax write offs for the upcoming year. I need to know if I should continue to purchase business start up costs using my personal checking account, or should I wait until I open my business account once I get all my incorporation papers? I also have many questions as to what exactly I can write off, how much I’ll get back, and how long it will take to get the money back. I have questions about rent, 1099 forms, etc. I realize that at some point I’m going to have to hire a local tax professional, I’m just hoping to find someone here who is willing to answer my questions and continue further communications.

If there’s anyone out there who’s willing to help, or at least answer the few questions I posted above, it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for looking!

I filed my small business tax return But have some questions, I’m not sure if I filed correctly Please help…

20 May

I sell in ebay and made a total of $27,064.99 I did not make any sales in my state (California) Only out of state sales. So I don’t owe any Taxes. Okay my question is that
Out of those $27K that I made in sales do I have to take away of what I had to pay for the item?
Example I sold a ring for $3,000 but it costed me $1,000 do I only claim $2,000?
Do I claim what I paid for shipping that I had to pay for sending the item to my customer?
What do they mean by deductions? Thanks

Obama plans to help small business and cut or eliminate the capital gains tax. Do you think this is a good idea?
So Republicans think a tax cut is a bad idea? How odd?

Why would a small business file an individual tax return?

02 May

The premise of my question is based on some politicians’ suggestion that all business owners will file tax returns as individuals, thereby losing all their rightful deductions in order to not be taxed as a business because the exemption for tax increases is income under $250K?
